An appeal has been made to the National Assembly(NAS) to expeditiously put in motion necessary machinery to ensure the passage of the National Building Code(NBC).
A former President of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors(NIS), Mr Olushola Atilola made the call in an interview with Homes and Property Guide.
According to him, the passage of the ‘very critical bill’ had been long overdue noting, that the delay in the passage of the draft bill by the National Assembly was doing great harm to the construction industry.
Atilola said that the non-passage of the bill by NASS, was partly responsible for the incessant building collapses being experienced nationwide. He added that the ugly development was worrisome and needed to be urgently addressed.
The former NIS helmsman wondered why the draft bill which, he learnt, had scaled through third reading and had even been committed to the committee of the whole House, was yet to be passed.
According to him, the passage of the bill which was put together by the seven professional bodies in the built environment was conceived with a view to addressing the challenges confronting the construction industry.
His words: ” I urge the NASS to stop foot-dragging on the issue of the passage of this lofty bill as it would in no small way check the anomalies bedeviling the construction industry. And not only that, it would further bring a great deal of sanity to the incessant cases of building collapse.”
