Home décor has evolved beyond ensuring there are furniture in the house or fitting one or two things in corners in order to fill the space. Interior decoration and tastefully furnishing your home is not only for the elite, or the high and mighty, neither is it a luxury reserved for the wealthy. There are basic principles to put into consideration when putting together decorations in your home.
In an interview with Furniture design expert and interior decorator, Gabriel Adedeji, Overseer and Chief Executive Officer of The Grand Custom, Adedeji outlined some of these basic principles. Amongst others, he explained the importance of color, form, space management, lighting, and creativity.
“Your home is your haven, make it magnificent,” he opined.
Lighting is important. Be it natural lighting, ambient lighting, task lighting, or accent lighting, lighting influences the general atmosphere of any space, just as much as it can influence the size by creating an illusion of a bigger space. Poor lighting would make a room feel cramped. Proper lighting would also create harmony with the color selections, room size and layout, fabric choices and furniture selection. Natural light draws attention to textures, colors, and forms of a space. So you might really need to avoid blocking the flow of natural light in your home. Avoid blocking windows with ceiling high furnishing.
According to the furniture design expert, your choice of color scheme for your room or sitting room shouldn’t be centered on your visual preferences alone; there are other things to consider, which includes mood, space, ambience, and the type of fittings you would want to add to the room. There are dramatic colors, and there are colors that set the mood either by helping you relax, or by inciting a feeling of freshness and joy.
Do big things with small spaces
Be it an office space or home space, proper space planning reflects the aesthetic atmosphere and overall structure of the room. You can consider doing a lot even with the smallest spaces, though also consider not overdoing them. The overall space is the key when it comes to making choices for new shelving or furniture. It’s also important to leave enough empty or negative space to allow for easy navigation. So in doing big things with small spaces, you can consider perfect fittings for the rooms, well sized furniture, that would fit just right in the space without making the home look cluttered.
